A Day For Jake 2023

On March 11, the snowboard world came together again to celebrate the legacy of Jake Burton Carpenter. Since his passing in 2019, riders all over the world take a communal lap to celebrate his vision, spirit, and the massive list of contributions he gave to snowboarding. This day, and Jake’s legacy, are powerful because they point to something bigger than themselves. They point to communities and cultures in every corner of the map and inspire us to come together in the good name of snowboarding. A reminder that every time we strap in we are joining that global family and having one hell of a time doing it. The core message of this celebratory shred is one we too share with Jake. Go ride, carry the flag forward.

In 2023, we led that charge at two different East Coast locations. One at Bristol Mountain, our home mountain in New York, and the other at Bolton Valley, our familiar friend in Vermont. We didn’t want just any flag to carry forward; though pretty much any sturdy pole would do, we wanted a visual reference to demonstrate the message by. Naturally, we turned to our neighbors down the block at Golden Supply Co. The small batch hand-made goods manufacturer consists of a highly knowledgable group of magicians. At least that’s the only thing we could think of so far to explain how many tricks they have up their sleeve and how personal their creations are. In reality, Golden Supply is run by a small team of artisans who create soft goods from chainstitch-embroidered work jackets to custom screen printed pennants. Although we did find out that it’s all by hand and not with magic. With hoots hollered and groomers ripped, the flags flew and the skiers watched in awe. Another day spent riding in good company with many more to look forward to. It’s a simple thing that means so much to each of us. So read this as a thank you, a remembrance, and a statement about what we want to see continued in the world; a community gathered doing what they love the most. A shared passion for the act of snowboarding and where that act will take you. Because of this community, a canvas flag takes on a life of its own. It’s a memento that now represents an attitude, a family, and a symbol for what we will carry into the future.

Ride on, Jake.
